Where in the Collection?

Children's books can appear in various places in the library depending on a few different factors. Some Young Adult current works may be in the LEISURE reading room. The GCC Library has organized most of the books in the JUVENILE section, located in the tall shelves on the south side of the General Collection just east of the Reference books (ask at the Reference desk if you have trouble finding it):

The call numbers for the books will all begin with JUV, which will be followed by: PIC for picture books, YOUTH for chapter/ middle grade books, and YA for Young Adult. Example: JUV - YOUTH LIN WHER 2009

Epic!
This digital reading platform for kids 12 and under with more than 35,000 thousand high-quality and award-winning fiction and nonfiction books, audio books, and videos from 250 publishers. Epic! is completely free for teachers and librarians.
Storyline Online
The SAG-AFTRA Foundation’s award-winning children’s literacy website, Storyline Online, streams videos featuring celebrated actors reading children’s books alongside creatively produced illustrations. Readers include Viola Davis, Chris Pine, Lily Tomlin, Kevin Costner, Annette Bening, James Earl Jones, Betty White and dozens more.
Oxford Owl
Oxford Owl is an award-winning website from Oxford University Press, created to support children’s learning both at home and at school. After registering (which is free), you gain free access to many of Oxford’s ebooks for free, along with other guides and games to help children develop their reading skills.
Open Library
Open Library is a part of the non-profit Internet Archive, and as such is continually updating its collection of links to free books online—including lots for children! They currently offer access to over 20,000 free titles for children, including newer titles and classics.
Project Gutenberg
Project Gutenberg is known for its collection of classic works, available for free because their copyright has expired. The work of digitizing and proof-reading these works is done entirely by volunteers. These titles are often available in plain text as well as other formats, and can be read online or downloaded to personal devices.
Library Of Congress
The Library of Congress provides a number of classic children’s books free online, without requiring a library card. With full page scans, this service allows you to get the full feeling of reading an antique book, from the retro font choices to the original illustrations.
International Children's Digital Library
ICDL is a nonprofit organization that provides access to the best children’s books of their culture, and cultures around the world regardless of where they live. There are over 4,000 titles in 59 languages to choose from, that you can read to your children.
Amazon Free Kids' E-books
You can find free Kindle books for kids categorized under the Children’s eBooks section. There are several subcategories like Action & Adventure, Animals, Early Learning, Sports & Outdoors, each with 100 free eBooks to pick from so you can read a different one each day to your kids.
Flip-Along Storytime
40 great children's books read on YouTube.
Stories from Space
While in space, astronauts are videotaping themselves reading these books to the children of Earth. These videos are being edited and placed on this Story Time From Space website- look under the heading "Story Time Videos."

Complete the online application to get your eCard number now. If you already have a Phoenix Public Library card, you do not need an eCard. Your current library card number can be used to access online resources and place holds.

If you would like to check out physical materials from Phoenix Public Library, simply go to nearest branch with a photo ID and present your eCard number to a staff member to be issued a library card with checkout privileges. If you have any problems getting an eCard with this form, please visit your nearest branch with a photo ID to obtain a library card.

Great Writers: Roald Dahl Full Video (46:09)
Roald Dahl, 1916-1990, Britain's best selling author of children's books like "Charlie and the Chocolate Factory" and "James and the Giant Peach," is known for his children's stories, but he led an adventurous early life as biplane pilot in Africa, RAF fighter pilot in WWII, and British intelligence agent. His daughter Ophelia and his second wife, Felicity Crosland Dahl, recall Dahl's family and writing life at Gipsy House in Great Missenden, England. Apart from Dahl's books for children, he wrote erotic adult fiction, poetry and plays. We hear excerpts from some of his children's stories, see illustrations by Quentin Blake, and meet his French editor. Dahl refutes criticism of his slightly naughty descriptions and unsympathetic portrait of women in "The Witches," and jabs at accepted conventions as a connection to the realism of childhood.
Teaching Literacy Full Video (21:30)
Studies show that students who enjoy reading and writing have expanded comprehension skills and better overall communication skills. This video demonstrates that with a little creativity, learning to read and write can be fun. Whole class and small group activities include shared and guided reading, learning centers, rephrasing, reinforcement, and summarizing. Students will be encouraged to reflect, discuss, and support each other as they develop these new skills.
