About this Guide

Welcome to the EXS290: Intro to Evidence-Based Practice Research Guide!  This guide is meant to help you understand evidence-based practice (EBP) and to identify appropriate resources for your assignments. It is divided into several main parts, which can be found on the left side of this page:

 

Getting Started -- This tab is meant to help you identify starting points for research into your topic.  This includes background information resources along with sources and hints to help you begin.

Hierarchy of Evidence -- Explains the level of evidence provided in different categories of research articles.

Find Articles -- This tab will provide information to help you find online articles, journals, magazines, and newspapers on your topic.

Find Books -- This tab will provide information on finding topical books available either at the GCC Library, online, or through another MCCCD library.

Interlibrary Loan -- Provides information on acquiring access to research articles outside of GCC subscriptions.

 

What is Evidence-Based Practice?

 

ASSESS the patient 1. Start with the patient -- a clinical problem or question arises from the care of the patient
ASK the question 2. Construct a well built clinical question derived from the case
ACQUIRE the evidence 3. Select the appropriate resource(s) and conduct a search
APPRAISE the evidence 4. Appraise that evidence for its validity (closeness to the truth) and applicability (usefulness in clinical practice)
APPLY talk with the patient 5. Return to the patient -- integrate that evidence with clinical expertise, patient preferences and apply it to practice
 
Self-evaluation evaluate your peformance with the patient 6. Evaluate your performance with this patient
