In the Rogerian approach, the writer finds common ground with opponents of the argument. By finding a point on which both parties can agree, the writer is more likely to persuade the reader.

A Rogerian argument:

• introduces a topic
• summarizes the opposing viewpoint, respectfully and within context
• addresses the common ground between diverse points of view
• state's the writer's position, within context
• summarizes by suggesting compromise or showing how diverse approaches complement one another
