To look at education in America, Oscar-winning filmmaker Davis Guggenheim brings us his third documentary TEACH, which asks the question, What does it take to be a teacher? No Mas Bebes (Sprout)
They came to have their babies. They went home sterilized. No Más Bebés tells the story of a little-known but landmark fight for reproductive justice. During the 1970s, a group of Mexican immigrant women sued county doctors, the state, and the U.S. government after they were sterilized while giving birth at Los Angeles County-USC Medical Center.

Alongside intrepid young lawyers and armed with hospital records secretly gathered by a whistle-blowing doctor, the mothers stood up to powerful institutions in the name of justice.

Armed with their own cameras and their own voices, the teens of Paper Tigers offer raw but valuable insight into the hearts and minds of teens pushing back against the specter of a hard childhood.

Against the harsh reality of truancy, poor grades, emotional pain, and physical violence, answers begin to emerge. The answers do not come easily. Nor can one simply deduce a one-size-fits-all solution to a trauma-informed education. But there is no denying something both subtle and powerful at work between teacher and student alike: the quiet persistence of love.

Sixty years after the Little Rock Nine faced mobs of racially charged hatred and became cornerstones of the Civil Rights movement, TEACH US ALL examines how the present day United States education system fails to live up to that promise of desegregation as it slides back into a re-segregation of its modern schools.
Due to storied histories of discriminatory housing practices which enforced segregation, case studies of the public schools in Little Rock, New York City, and Los Angeles present microcosms of the inequities and challenges manifesting in classrooms across America. Educator turnover rates become such that some schools just have to depend on warm bodies. Applying to a high school in a better neighborhood becomes more competitive than applying for an Ivy League university. The labyrinthine admissions process leaves working-class and minority parents out in the cold, and students believe their high schools are just pipelines into the prison system.

Deeply imbedded within the complexities of American society are issues such as poverty, race relations, gender equity, cultural identity and privilege. These issues arrive in classrooms every day where learners converge from many backgrounds, identities, and abilities.

This film touches on the lives and experiences of five dynamic educators whose passion for social justice was forged when they were in school. Their personal accounts bear witness to both the overt and subtle forms of injustice that create critical barriers to quality learning and inclusion. Each person enacted their beliefs in equity, access, and respect in order to provide a just and quality education for the learners they serve.

We invite people everywhere to learn from their experiences and see what they can do to make education more just and equitable for all.

When Can I Use Images?

Different rules apply if you are using an image as part of a class assignment versus creating something you plan to publish.

For Class: make sure you cite any image you use (see the Citation Guide for format). Most of GCC Library's Databases provide citations in correct format if you find the image in the database. Plagiarism and copyright infringement are not the same. Copyright infringement is illegal and has potentially legal and monetary consequences; plagiarism in academic terms can result in academic consequences (failing grade, referral to administration, academic probation.)
For Publication: Assume all images you find online are copyrighted. Look for an explanation of how the image can be used. The safest designation is one that is in "public domain." These are open for any use. Others may indicate you can use the image with proper attribution, which is the guideline for Creative Commons licenses. When in doubt, contact the creator and ask for permission or don't use!
